Lessons: Decide, Hustle, Have Faith

When I started this podcast, I decided that there were a few people I really should interview.  So what if I didn’t know them or have any idea how to reach them… All of those details are temporary circumstances – none of it erases intention.  True, some people are really hard to contact.  Does that stop me from trying?  No.

I do my part.  I email, call, send letters, tweet, DM, play six degrees of Kevin Bacon, etc.  I always use my manners.  I always assume that anything is possible.  So far, almost everybody I’ve asked has said yes.  However, sometimes nothing happens.  I celebrate the nothingness anyway, because I know I did everything in my control… and then I assume that anything is possible and I trust that it will simply work out somehow.

Frank Gehry, the famous architect, is a very hard man to reach.  Four months and I haven’t been successful yet.  I’ve tried everything I could think of and nothing worked.  (The receptionists in his office are very well trained to keep the distractions out.)  But I didn’t give up thinking it would happen.  This is where it gets good…

A few days ago I was helping a friend move some boxes out of his parents garage.  We were chatting, having a good time.  I told him I was going to Los Angeles to see a famous mid-century modern home the following week.  When he realized I was interested in architecture, he said, “Wait a second, I have a present for you.”  He rummaged through some stuff and handed me a book about Frank Gehry.  I explained that I really wanted to interview Mr. Gehry, but hadn’t been successful reaching him.  My friend then said, “Well, my brother will be here in 10 minutes and his best friend is Frank Gehry’s grandson.  Maybe he can help get you in touch.”

Sure enough, his brother arrived, we discussed how I might reach Mr. Gehry, traded emails, and he said he would try to help me.  I don’t know if he will actually try to help me.  And if he does try, I don’t know if he has the capacity to make anything happen.  But…  I ASSUME ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.  Life is more fun that way.

Surely, by now, you can see how cool it would be if I somehow arrange the interview with Frank Gehry.  But it is bigger than the interview, isn’t it?  Decide.  Hustle.  Have faith.
